The Foundation Focus
Emerging technologies hold many uncertainties. Developing
the technology into a profitable business opportunity is normally a significant
challenge at best. Working through the issues, developing solutions, and making
a business case is not easy. Knowledge of both technology and business is
required to address the challenges in order to develop a comprehensive solution.
the Foundation focuses on these interrelated technologies:
Nano Technologies
While one of the most intriguing developments in the last few years, Nano Technology is an enigma to many. The marketing hype touting "nano" as the sure fire solution to everything from stronger materials to future electronics has been borne out in only a few specific areas. There are a number of "nano" applications that are being produced already, but significant work must be done before that "killer" application occurs that everyone is waiting for. The questions each organizations must ask include: "Does nano technology fit in our strategy?" and "Will nano impact our business?" It takes an understanding of where technology is moving.
MEMS/NEMS
Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) is an old "new" technology. MEMS has been around for years, but is finally being recognized as a technology that has widespread applications. In addition, the photonics aspect of this and its inclusion into semiconductors further complicates the understanding of exactly what MEMS, or the nano version NEMS, is and what it can do. The inclusion of optics in the device conjures up more acronyms, MOEMS and NOEMS. While, these technologies are intimately tied to both semiconductors and nano technology, MEMS/NEMS planning must account for developments in the related technologies.
Semiconductors
The mainstay of the burgeoning electronics industry that is enhancing life throughout the world is the semiconductor industry. The growth of applications have been expedited by the shrinking feature sizes that permit additional complexities in smaller packages. The cell phone of today is a marvel in miniaturization and features especially when compared to the original models of the 1960s. The technology options and their implications must be a part of any organization's plans.
